Sommet mondial des Villes

>>> ENGLISH BELOW

Sujet universel, formes universelles

>> ENGLISH VERSION

Kiblind has produced a short animated film, to highlight the links that unite the City, Culture and Sustainable Development. It was screened in Durban (South Africa) on the occasion of the World Summit of Cities, set up by the international organization UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments), which works for intercity cooperation and facilitates the establishment programs, networks and partnerships between cities and local governments.

In 2018, the City of Lyon received in Mexico City the UCLG – Culture 21 Prize, which rewards every two years a community in the world for a cultural project or policy committed to the sustainable development of its territory. More specifically, the « Cultural Cooperation Charter of the Sustainable City of Lyon« , initiated by the Department of Cultural Affairs, was endowed with a grant of € 25,000. In return, the City of Lyon commissioned a short film that presents an educational way of what the city is, what sustainable development is and how culture contributes to the sustainable development of the city. Kiblind was contacted for the production of this film.

Universal subject, universal forms

We liked the subject right away. Because it is universal, philosophical, philanthropic and progressive. But also because it is particularly complex, especially when it comes to finding the right graphic translation of the subject.

Because if the theme of culture is shared by all, as well as that of the city and sustainable development, cultures are plural and each city has its specificities. Not to mention the semantic differences from one community to another and the financial gap that separates mega-cities and more modest communities, from one corner to the other of the globe.

Our goal was then to make a film that could speak to everyone and where everyone would recognize themselves, whatever their age, their location, their beliefs, on the four cardinal points. We then turned to the side of universals: geometric shapes and simple colors.

Point, line, plane

Figurative abstraction is like a unifier: since it does not represent anyone, everyone can recognize themselves. Once the graphic direction was validated, the storyboard phase could begin.

Sketches with large lines in black felt-tip pen, boxes and annotations: rhythm, dynamism, narration… each sequence had to be thought of both as a total illustration of a moment and as a small part of the whole, of the whole story . It’s sequencing.

Then, after each painting had found its image, that each sentence was illustrated in a fixed mode, then came the stage of setting in motion. Page by page, each simple element was analyzed to find its dynamic, fluid and correct. And motion design could really start, from A to Z. For the choice of colors, we started on the chromatic range of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, carried by the UN.

The voice

The film finally edited, it remained to give sound to the image, to embody the text that we had spent so much time peeling. Our choice fell on a female voice, both soft and dynamic, rhythmic and clear. Positive. A female voice because culture is a feminine concept.

The original version was the French version, followed closely by the English and Spanish versions, with or without subtitles.

As a final touch, to add binder and participate in the atmosphere, a sound sheet has been added, without being too present not to hinder the voice, nor too neutral.

« And one thing that can help us is culture »

The film was screened on November 13, 2019 at the UCLG World Summit in Durban, South Africa, in the Indian Ocean province of KwaZulu-Natal.

This event constitutes the largest gathering of mayors, association presidents, councilors and representatives of local authorities.
